I hadn’t previously heard TOO much about Robert H Treman State Park in Ithaca prior to this. Friends posted about it here and there, but some people (in Buffalo at least) have never even heard of it at all. We decided to check it out before our short road trip home. Once we got there, we weren’t sure why we hadn’t heard more about this place. It was beautiful.
ROBERT H TREMAN STATE PARK
This place totally reminded of us the beauty of Watkins Glen without the herds of hikers. I’m sure part of this was because it was a Monday morning, but still! The 9 miles of trails here take you along a gorge called Enfield Glen. Here, you can go past 12 waterfalls with the most impressive one being the 115 ft Lucifer Falls. We took the Gorge Trail to the Upper Gorge Trail which was only about 2.25 miles one way. When you get to the top of Lucifer you can see a mile and half down the woods and gorge. It’s amazing!
There is also a natural swimming pool located at the easternmost waterfall, known as Lower Falls. I’m told there is a lifeguard on duty in the summer on weekends so I would imagine this is the busy time at the park.
WE WERE THE ONLY PEOPLE THERE AND IT WAS GLORIOUS
I should probably mention we did this hike sans coffee; super risky for me and also quite an accomplishment. Thankfully, there was literally NO crowd. We couldn’t believe it! We were so happy to just frolic along the gorge at any speed we pleased with no other humans in sight. We’re not anti-social, I swear. We just like to escape civilization in the wilderness sometimes.
This was the perfect cap to our long weekend getaway and I will definitely return here to check out more of the park.
